I Used Poker Solvers Completely Wrong

When I first started using PioSOLVER, I went on the biggest downswing of my career.


It was not because solvers do not work.


It was because I completely misunderstood what they were for.


I was running simulations every day, reviewing outputs and spending hours trying to improve. It looked like good study.


But instead of teaching me how to think, the solver slowly started doing my thinking for me.


I kept asking:

What does Pio do here?

What I should have been asking was:

What is Pio trying to teach me?

That distinction completely changed how I study poker.

The Solver Memory Trap


Whenever I reviewed a hand, I would immediately look for the answer.


Does this combination bet or check? Which size does it use? Does it mix between two actions?


Then I would open another simulation with different positions, stack depths or board textures—and the strategy would change.


Before long, I was no longer learning how poker worked. I was trying to memorise thousands of isolated answers.


This is where solver study becomes overwhelming.


You can spend hours analysing outputs and feel incredibly productive. But instead of becoming more confident, your decisions become less clear because poker starts to feel like an impossible memory test.


The problem is that real poker does not take place inside a perfectly constructed solver tree.


People use unexpected sizes. Some opponents bluff too much. Others barely bluff at all. ICM changes incentives. Players panic, misclick and take lines that theoretically should not exist.


The moment your opponent deviates from the script, a memorised answer can quickly become useless.


Stop Asking “What?” and Start Asking “Why?”


The best players are not carrying millions of solver outputs around in their heads.


They have built principles and frameworks that continue to work when the situation changes.


My solver study improved when I stopped asking only what the solver did and started asking:

  • Why is it betting?

  • Why does it check?

  • Why does it prefer this size?

  • Which range has the equity advantage?

  • Who has more of the strongest hands?

  • What feature of the board creates this strategy?

  • What would need to change for the answer to be different?


I stopped opening the solver merely to find an answer.


I started opening it to build understanding.


Zoom Out Before You Zoom In


Imagine we are studying a Button-versus-Big-Blind pot on an A-7-2 rainbow flop.


The old version of me would immediately examine individual combinations:


What does A-10 do? Does K-Q bet? Which hands mix? What is the exact betting frequency?


The problem is that those details change when we adjust the board, positions, stack depth or bet size.


A better approach is to zoom out first.


Ask:

What kind of board is this, and why does the overall strategy look this way?

This is a disconnected Ace-high flop.


The preflop raiser has a stronger range, more equity and more of the hands that are comfortable putting significant money into the pot. That allows them to apply pressure with a high-frequency betting strategy.


The exact frequencies matter less than the reason behind them.


Once you understand that reason, the lesson can transfer to other disconnected Ace-high boards.


You no longer need to remember a number from a simulation you studied three weeks ago.


You understand what is happening.


What to Take From Every Solver Session


Before closing a simulation, try to answer four questions:


  1. What is the overall strategy?


    Does the range bet frequently, check frequently or use multiple sizes?


  2. Why does that strategy make sense?


    Consider equity, nut advantage, position, stack depth and how each range connects with the board.


  3. Which patterns transfer elsewhere?


    Look for ideas that remain useful across similar boards and situations.


  4. How can I train this?


    Practise making decisions before checking the output rather than passively reading the solution.


The goal is not to reproduce the solver perfectly.


It is to improve the quality of your decisions when you are playing against real people, under pressure, with incomplete information.


Use Solvers to Become Less Dependent on Solvers


Poker became less overwhelming when I stopped trying to memorise it.


Not because I suddenly knew every answer, but because I understood what I was trying to learn.


A solver should help you build clearer mental models, recognise patterns and understand why

strategies change.


It should not become a crutch you need whenever the situation feels unfamiliar.


The goal of solver study is not to depend on the solver more.


It is to trust your own thinking more.
